Someday = NEVER

I know what you’re thinking, “Deidre, someday is the farthest thing from NEVER…what are you talking about?”

Let’s start by thinking about when we use the word, “someday”. Typically, it’s something that we would like to have happen, but we either don’t have a plan in place to make it happen:

  • I would love to go to Paris someday.
  • Someday, it would really neat to see the Grand Canyon.
  • I’m going to write a book someday.

Or we say someday, because we don’t believe in its possibility:

  • Someday, I would like to be a bazillionaire.
  • Someday, I want to be sitting on the beach, sipping on a cocktail and making money while my website makes me trillions of dollars.

In the first case, the use of the word “someday” is actually hypnotic, giving us good feelings as if we’re making someday happen. It’s tragic if you think about it because we’re tricking ourselves into a false sense of accomplishment when we’re no closer to “someday” than the first day we said it! Over time, this leads to disappointment and regret when the “somedays” add up…eventually having the potential to bring on depression and bitterness over our lack of accomplishment.

The first step to stop tricking ourselves or lulling ourselves into a false sense of accomplishment is to recognize when we’re thinking about things that will happen “someday”. You might even want to ask a friend to help you out!

Reset Your Life

Once we start recognizing the places where we’ve allowed ourselves to be tricked by “someday”, we can put a plan into place with goals and deadlines:

  • I am saving money ($ per month) now for a trip to Paris in 3 years.
  • I would really like to go to the Grand Canyon, so I’m putting $ aside each month so I can go next year.
  • Tonight, I’m going to start writing for x minutes and x times per week so I can get my first book done and be a published author!

Can you see the difference? With the word “someday”, the idea was distant and nebulous. As soon as we added a plan with action and deadlines, now we have an empowered idea in place!

As for things that we don’t believe will happen, there’s nothing wrong with dreaming:

  • You know, if would become a bazillionaire, this is what I would do with my money…
  • While I’m sitting on the beach, sipping on a cocktail and making money because my website makes me trillions of dollars, I will do…

Dreaming like this is actually healthy and can reveal what’s truly important to you. Dream, it’s okay!
